What is a cannabis strain?

Indica, sativa and hybrid. Does that ring a bell? These are the three categories into which cannabis is normally divided.

Indica originates from India as the name suggests – from the Hindu Kush mountains to be more specific. Indica is believed to have that relaxing and chilling effect on the consumers, which is the reason for it being quite popular for stress-relief and people suffering from insomnia.

On the other hand we’ve got Sativa, which is known for its energizing and uplifting effects. Hybrids are a combination of the two.

However, you should really be careful when choosing a strain. Head of data science at Confident Cannabis, Amon Elberg, claims that the terms indica, sativa and hybrid are more or less useless terms. This statement is built upon his researches showing that there are no identifiable characteristics that are consistent within each category.
Nevertheless, the terms might be useless but there are still consistencies  between strain names.

Elberg states

“Not all seeds that are sold under the same name are genetically identical, or even necessarily related. Some producers may choose to create a strain name essentially as a branding exercise, or to identify their product with an existing name because they believe the products matches characteristics the market expects from products sold under that name”

“.. In general, for the less common names, products sold by different vendors tend to be pretty consistent. For the most common strain names, however, a wider variety of different products are sold”, Elberg claims.

In other words. Do some research upon your strain before buying it. We strongly recommend you to watch reviews from previous customers and see their results.

And please remember that every person reacts differently to cannabis. So take it easy and start with small steps.
